I have an obsession with collecting cooking books but as Mr Blues will tell you, I’m far from a chef in the making.  He’s experienced first hand each and every one of my cooking disasters: turning his kitchen into a war zone, serving up a chilli with a little too much chilli powder and my piece de resistance:  a freezing cold full English. But every now and again, I arrive on his doorstep with bags full of ingredients and he smiles, vacates to a safe area with his cat and patiently waits for the smoke alarm to join the party.  Why do we continue to play this charade?

We’re both romantics. We love nights in with a home cooked meal and a good movie over a crowded restaurant any day of the week.  And as it turns out, we’re not alone. Hello Fresh carried out a survey recently and found over a third of British men and a quarter of women are planning a cosy, romantic night in to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a home cooked meal too. They found the most popular date night dish to prepare is steak (which funnily enough, Mr Blues cooked for me on our second date), closely followed by a full roast dinner and curry (you can never go wrong with a spicy aphrodisiac).

The poll also highlights  ‘two-thirds of British women believe that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’ and I’m definitely one of those women. I’ve never given up trying to prepare a meal for Mr Blues because I imagined there was something so satisfying about watching your date tuck in and enjoy a dish you prepared from scratch.  Hello Fresh have always been on my radar and funnily enough, just over a month ago I won a blog competition to try one of their recipe boxes. As Mr Blues waited apprehensively in the other room, I cooked up a steak stir fry with minimal pot banging. It was delicious. In fact, it was so good he went back for seconds and my mum and sister enjoyed the rest when I dropped off the leftovers. A cooking triumph if ever there was one!

Hello Fresh deserve all the credit because had it not been for their recipe box, Mr Blues would still be smiling, rolling his eyes and running for cover. Their recipe cards are easy to follow, spices and sauces measured out and all I had to do was prepare the veg. By taking the stress out of cooking, I was able to enjoy putting together a romantic meal using fresh ingredients with confidence we both thoroughly enjoyed. Restaurant meals come and go, they’re barely memorable, but this is one meal we’ll never forget.

I agree that a man’s heart goes through his stomach! This year my and my bf will celebrate Valentine’s Day in a restaurant and let others cook for us, but on any other day we do cook for each other and it’s always a challenge to find more delicious recipes that are easy to make 🙂

Food is my one true love (well one down from my doggo) so I definitely agree with the saying ‘the way to the heart is through the stomach’ haha! It’s so hard finding delicious meals to cook that seem ultra-sophisticated but are in fact ultra easy! I’m sure you guys will have a blast tomorrow no matter what happens! Happy Valentine’s Day!

I am awful at cooking, I used to be able to bake but now I can’t really stand long enough to even do that. I can definitely agree that the way to Ash’s heart is via his stomach and he would agree too.

It makes sense that curry is one of the UK’s most popular dishes, as it is definitely mine! Like you said you can’t go wrong with a spicy aphrodisiac!

Haha I love that Mr Blues is so understanding of your cooking disasters, he is pure gold! I think the way to a man’s heart is through great intelligent conversation but that is only because I hate cooking lol

I am fine cooking normal meals, but if I try something new it is usually a nightmare, just yesterday I was talking to my husband about a new recipe I had found and his words were don’t do it. I have used Hello Fresh in the past and they are so easy to follow and make x

I’m not surprised that the curry is the favourite dish in the Uk. They can be so simple to cook from scratch and very adaptable too.

My husband laughs at me, because whereas I can create some lovely meals and am by no means a novice, he says I create a mess and several small fires in the kitchen.

The idea of the Hello Fresh box is a great idea for having a handy and healthy meal, with all your needs and just the right amounts.

Show me the food and I am as happy as I can be! Thing is I cant cook, so I have to hope the wife will do it :o)

I love sharing food with my husband, but alas, he’s just not a foodie! He actually uttered the words “I don’t like cheese.” the other day, which I think should be grounds for divorce, lol! No, in all honesty, he does like a good meal too – wish we could get these HelloFresh boxes in Shetland!
