Scottish Craft Focus: Face Masks from The Beauty Apothecarist

I’m going to be honest: I never scrimp on skincare. Spending a week’s food shop budget on a luxury cleansing balm has never bothered me (since my student days at least). I always believed that spending that bit more (or breaking the bank in some cases) was in the best interests of my skin. Does that make me sound crazy? Seriously starting to wonder because since I discovered The Beauty Apothecarist, I’ve done a complete 180 on everything I thought I knew about good skincare. Fun fact: it doesn’t need to cost the earth.

img_20161025_102452

Let me take you back to September when I first met Tara. I was at Milngavie Makers Market and her stall drew me in – it was BEAUTIFUL. Her infectious personality (I mean that in the most sincere way, she’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met) and knowledge kept me chatting, whilst ooo-ing and ahh-ing over her products.  This couldn’t have happened at a better time (I don’t generally believe in fate, I’m more of a plan your own destiny kind of person) because my skin had completely fallen out with me; it was dry, irritated and I was at the end of my tether. Thankfully, Tara wasn’t willing to give up on my skin so easily..

Monster Mask

Turns out monster masks aren’t just for Halloween! Tara recommended that I try her Monster Mask Superfood Antioxidant Mask (£7.00) to help to soothe and calm my irritated skin. At first, I was a little bit sceptical because nothing was working, but once she explained the mask a bit more to me, I warmed to the idea and made a purchase.

img_1031

One of the main ingredients in Monster Mask is beetroot juice powder.  Beetroot juice is packed full of vitamins and minerals which helps to reduce dark spots/blemishes, moisturises even the driest skin (trust me, I can vouch for this) and also helps to decrease wrinkles and fine lines. As well this, it’s perfect if you suffer from acne or extra pigmentation – such a wonderful vegetable! I had no idea about all these benefits until Tara told me and that was it – SOLD!

I make up this mask using one or two teaspoons of powder, a couple of tablespoons of natural yogurt and a dash of honey (that’s as close to becoming Gordon Ramsay as I’m going to get). You could easily use water instead, but I prefer yogurt because it’s so cooling – my skin loves it. Leave it on as I soak on the bath (I love the smell of beetroot…it smells SO GOOD!) and relax. That’s another thing that I love: I can leave these masks on for a good fifteen/twenty minutes and my skin doesn’t get aggravated. And it’s PURPLE which just makes everything in the world better.

I’ve been using this mask once a week, every week and my skin is reaping the rewards.  It looks plumper, more hydrated and happy. All at a cost of £7.00.  There’s so much product in the jar it will easily see me through the next month or so. (Another tip: if you make up too much face mask mixture to use in one go, cover it over and leave it in the fridge for your next pamper session).

Pumpkin Spice

Fast forward to October’s Milngavie Makers Market and I couldn’t wait to tell Tara how much I loved her Monster Mask. She barely got a word in edge ways to begin with (sorry Tara!) but something I did notice: she was genuinely happy for me. I can’t even think back to a time I’ve revisited a beauty counter and had the same reaction. Yet another thing I love about the crafting community.

img_20161021_152343-1

As it was Autumn, Tara had yet another face mask that I had to try: Pumpkin Spice. I can;’t even begin to describe how amazing this mask smells because I won’t do it any sort of justice. It’s everything I love about Autumn. Even upon smelling it, I knew it was coming home with me. My skin suffers terribly in these colder months and Tara recommended I give this a go to get me through the chilly days ahead (it’s getting freezing!).

Tara’s Pumpkin Spice Brightening Mask (£7.00) is made up of  pumpkin powder, turmeric powder, French pink clay, ground nutmeg and ground cinnamon (you now understand why it smells so good!). Again, I make up this mask the exact same way as I did before. leave it on whilst I soak in the bath and then rinse of with a warm water. Oh and I try not to lick any off because it smells good enough to eat!

Whilst Monster Mask has really calmed and hydrated my skin, Pumpkin Spice has given my skin a natural glow (I don’t think I’ve ever had glowy skin before). There’s actually been days that I haven’t reached for one of my beloved foundations  because I’m so pleased with how my skin is looking. Using each of these masks one a week has brought my skin to life.

img_20161114_175418

And I genuinely owe it all to The Beauty Apothecarist. In such a short space of time, Tara has taught me so much about skincare. I’m now more interested in what I’m putting onto my skin (I spend more time reading over ingredients lists than I ever have done in my life). What I’ve learned is that my skin craves products that are natural, organic and made with love. Thankfully, that’s everything Tara herself believes in.

I’m going to end this post here but I genuinely want to thank Tara for all the help she has given me recently, particularly in relation to my transplant recovery. She took time out of her hectic crafting schedule to work with me on products that I could use throughout my recovery (I’m not allowed to wash my face), making sure they were perfect before sending them to me. I’ll do a follow up post soon on my new skincare routine soon but I’m definitely converted and my skin is SO happy!

Be sure to visit The Beauty Apothecarist and view the full range of skincare products  offered (as well as body scrubs and bath melts that smell like jaffa cakes). Tara offers FREE UK Mainland delivery and a free gift wrapping service – perfect for the festive season.  You can also keep up to date with Tara’s latest creations on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter.

My skin and I have made a friend for life!

It smells so good. So glad I discovered Tara and her products.

  4. November 14th, 2016 / 9:49 pm

Ooooh, the natural. Firstly, you took us on a tour of her shop, thank you. Secondly, the natural (which seems first, there, but…anyway). I love natural. We aren’t made to become immune to a bunch of chems and lots of times, lots of folks simply can’t use that stuff. Naturally made, organic ingredients, I’m sold. Too bad I’m way over here…but I’ve bookmarked her to revisit later. Thanks again. 🙂

    • November 16th, 2016 / 6:36 pm

Thanks so much for your comment. You should definitely contact Tara if you’re interested in any of the products. She’s always more than willing to help and ship what she can.

  5. November 14th, 2016 / 9:57 pm

I am loving these products and would love the mask. I have not seen these before but I was on their page and there are so many things I would want to get. I am going to ask if they ship to Austria. I also saw a scrub I want. All good things for my sensitive skin.

    • November 16th, 2016 / 6:37 pm

Awww that’s wonderful! Tara will definitely look after you. Would love to know how you get along (my skin is so sensitive too so I understand exactly what it’s like).

Ok, Sarah, you’ve totally drawn me in with that write up! I too am a product junkie and happily blow £100 on Charlotte Tilburys magic cream in the winter because my skin becomes just so darn rubbish as soon as the weather turns, However, you truly have convinced me to try these masks out, and who knows, maybe I can ditch the mega expensive winter creams!
I will let you know, Anna x

    • November 17th, 2016 / 3:33 pm

Hi Anna, hope you’re well! What did you think of the magic cream? I love Charlotte Tilbury make up but I just couldn’t decide whether to purchase it or not! My skin has responded so well to Tara’s face masks though and I’m definitely glad I introduced them as weekly steps in my skincare routine. Let me know how you get on! Sarah xx

i love the natural products for my skin too. their quality is equal to the products from luxury brand or sometimes even more and it save my budget. haha. at home, i usually use mask which made from honey and curcumin power to reduce dark spots/blemishes. You should try sometimes.
